Tablets notable, but not for all

Tablet PCs have always been something of a mystery to me. Until a few weeks ago, I'd never known anyone who used one, and I'd never tried one myself.

Since their debut in 2002, the sleek laptops with screens you can write on have grown popular with insurance companies, hospitals, warehouses and other businesses where employees need to fill out forms and jot down notes.

But they haven't lived up to Bill Gates' 2001 prediction that tablets would be the best-selling PC in America within five years.

Prices have come down and more companies are producing them. Some are now aimed at consumers.

With that in mind, I tested three new models from Lenovo, Toshiba and Hewlett-Packard. I wanted to see if any of these tablet PCs could be used as an all-purpose computer.

Nokia recalls 46 million phone batteries

Nokia is offering to replace the batteries of 46 million phones following complaints of overheating.

The problem concerns Nokia-branded BL-5C batteries manufactured by Matsushita, which are found in 300 million phones. These include popular handsets, such as the N71, N72 and 6230i.

Nokia has said in a statement on its website that it had 100 complaints about the batch of batteries manufactured between December 2005 and November 2006.
However, Mark Squires a representative for Nokia, told Computeractive that the complaints from UK users had reached only "single figures."

"The damage caused by these batteries is minimal, in the worst cases the overheating caused by the faulty batteries will cause the battery to expand, disfigure and dislodge, however it would not cause any phone damage," he said.

Subject: OpenSparc

This is not a joke. If AMD/Intel/VIA etc. pooled resources, this could be done in a year or two and blow x86 away. M$ would go with it. If they could sell 40 million in a year, the investment would be recouped in a year at $100/CPU. With this performance, they could charge $500/CPU.

Did you notice, I wrote, "M$ would go with it (x86)"? M$ was utterly unable to port their stuff to Vista let alone change architecture in years of effort. They would be out of the running with OpenSparc. Why would M$ partners do that? Everyone hates being a partner of M$ except for being excluded from the market.

GM to begin testing Volt electric car by spring

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., Aug 9 (Reuters) - General Motors Corp. will begin road testing its Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid in the spring of next year and remains on track to produce the rechargeable car by late 2010, a senior executive said on Thursday.

As the race to bring a mass-market, rechargeable electric vehicle to the market heats up, GM's global product chief Bob Lutz said he expects to have next-generation lithium-ion battery packs ready for the vehicles by October this year.

"We should have the battery packs by October," he said, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an industry conference. "We'll have some on the road for testing next spring, and we should have the Volt in production by the end of 2010."

GM is the only automaker to have provided a timeline on the production of a plug-in hybrid vehicle, even though other companies, such as Ford Motor Co.
